Acupuncture is a therapy which has been practised in China and other Eastern countries (Japan, Korea, Vietnam, etc.) for thousands of years. Over time it has branched into two streams. Eastern acupuncture which focuses on improving the overall wellbeing of the patient and Western which aims to treat specific symptoms.
Western medical acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points around the body using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology. Acupuncture works by stimulating receptors in your skin which in turn stimulates your nervous system.
Catherine uses acupuncture as a treatment technique during physiotherapy sessions and as a stand alone treatment for issues such as hot flushes (menopause or cancer treatment related).
Western medical acupuncture focuses on the treatment of pain and muscle dysfunction. This includes issues such as whiplash, back pain, plantar fasciitis (policeman's heel) and repetitive strain conditions such as tennis and golfer's elbow.
Due to a special interest in cancer symptom relief Catherine has also developed her skills in acupuncture for nausea, radiation related pain and hot flushes.
If you have a specific condition that you would like to discuss please contact Catherine directly.
Catherine will take information about your medical history, medication and current symptoms. Based on the findings of this assessment the therapist will gently insert very thin needles at certain points on your body. The needles are left in place for approximately 30 minutes and may be gently manipulated. You may be asked to remove some clothing.
